Abhinavagupta

Abhinavagupta (c. 975–1025 CE) was the foremost philosopher, exegete, and aesthetician of nondual Kashmir Śaivism. Active in the Kashmir Valley under the later Utpala kings, he synthesized Trika, Krama, and Kaula ritual and doctrine into a coherent vision of consciousness as Śiva, culminating in the encyclopedic Tantrāloka and its prose digest, the Tantrasāra. Born into a learned Brahmin family — his father Narasiṃhagupta was himself a scholar — Abhinavagupta studied under a wide circle of teachers spanning grammar, logic, Buddhist thought, and multiple Śaiva lineages. Tradition remembers him as a polymath who never married and gathered a large circle of disciples, among them Kṣemarāja. Beyond the Śaiva corpus he wrote major works of aesthetics (the Locana on Ānandavardhana's Dhvanyāloka, and the Abhinavabhāratī on Bharata's Nāṭyaśāstra), developing the influential theory of rasa and aesthetic absorption. His philosophical commentaries on Utpaladeva's Īśvarapratyabhijñā established Recognition (pratyabhijñā) as the intellectual backbone of the Trika school. The Sanskrit texts attributed to him survive chiefly through Kashmiri manuscript traditions later printed in the Kashmir Series of Texts and Studies (KSTS); modern digital editions such as those on GRETIL derive from these printings.
