Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: “Sir, they speak of the one called ‘a trainee’. How is a trainee defined?” “They train, mendicant, that’s why they’re called ‘a trainee’.

Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “‘Sekho, sekho’ti, bhante, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, sekho hotī”ti? “Sikkhatīti kho, bhikkhu, tasmā sekhoti vuccati.
