What Occupies the Mind

Cittapariyādānavagga

1 So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,

1 Evaṁ me sutaṁ— ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

“Mendicants!” “Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this: “Mendicants, I do not see a single sight that occupies a man’s mind like the sight of a woman.

“bhikkhavo”ti. “Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. Bhagavā etadavoca: “Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekarūpampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, itthirūpaṁ.

The sight of a woman occupies a man’s mind.” 2 “Mendicants, I do not see a single sound that occupies a man’s mind like the sound of a woman.

Itthirūpaṁ, bhikkhave, purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti. Paṭhamaṁ. 2 “Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekasaddampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, itthisaddo.

The sound of a woman occupies a man’s mind.” 3 “Mendicants, I do not see a single smell that occupies a man’s mind like the smell of a woman.

Itthisaddo, bhikkhave, purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti. Dutiyaṁ. 3 “Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekagandhampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, itthigandho.

The smell of a woman occupies a man’s mind.” 4 “Mendicants, I do not see a single taste that occupies a man’s mind like the taste of a woman.

Itthigandho, bhikkhave, purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti. Tatiyaṁ. 4 “Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekarasampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, itthiraso.

The taste of a woman occupies a man’s mind.” 5 “Mendicants, I do not see a single touch that occupies a man’s mind like the touch of a woman.

Itthiraso, bhikkhave, purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti. Catutthaṁ. 5 “Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekaphoṭṭhabbampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, itthiphoṭṭhabbo.

The touch of a woman occupies a man’s mind.” 6 “Mendicants, I do not see a single sight that occupies a woman’s mind like the sight of a man.

Itthiphoṭṭhabbo, bhikkhave, purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti. Pañcamaṁ. 6 “Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekarūpampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ itthiyā cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, purisarūpaṁ.

The sight of a man occupies a woman’s mind.” 7 “Mendicants, I do not see a single sound that occupies a woman’s mind like the sound of a man.

Purisarūpaṁ, bhikkhave, itthiyā cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti. Chaṭṭhaṁ. 7 “Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekasaddampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ itthiyā cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, purisasaddo.

The sound of a man occupies a woman’s mind.” 8 “Mendicants, I do not see a single smell that occupies a woman’s mind like the smell of a man.

Purisasaddo, bhikkhave, itthiyā cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti. Sattamaṁ. 8 “Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekagandhampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ itthiyā cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, purisagandho.

The smell of a man occupies a woman’s mind.” 9 “Mendicants, I do not see a single taste that occupies a woman’s mind like the taste of a man.

Purisagandho, bhikkhave, itthiyā cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti. Aṭṭhamaṁ. 9 “Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekarasampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ itthiyā cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, purisaraso.

The taste of a man occupies a woman’s mind.” 10 “Mendicants, I do not see a single touch that occupies a woman’s mind like the touch of a man.

Purisaraso, bhikkhave, itthiyā cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti. Navamaṁ. 10 “Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekaphoṭṭhabbampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ itthiyā cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, purisaphoṭṭhabbo.

The touch of a man occupies a woman’s mind.”

Purisaphoṭṭhabbo, bhikkhave, itthiyā cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti. Dasamaṁ. Rūpādivaggo paṭhamo.
