“Mendicants, three things are conveyed under cover, not in the open. What three? Ladies are conveyed for marriage with a veil, not unveiled. Hymns of the brahmins are conveyed under cover, not openly.

“Tīṇimāni, bhikkhave, paṭicchannāni āvahanti, no vivaṭāni. Katamāni tīṇi? Mātugāmo, bhikkhave, paṭicchanno āvahati, no vivaṭo; brāhmaṇānaṁ, bhikkhave, mantā paṭicchannā āvahanti, no vivaṭā;

Wrong view is conveyed under cover, not in the open. These three things are conveyed under cover, not in the open. Three things shine in the open, not under cover. What three?

micchādiṭṭhi, bhikkhave, paṭicchannā āvahati, no vivaṭā. Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi paṭicchannāni āvahanti, no vivaṭāni. Tīṇimāni, bhikkhave, vivaṭāni virocanti, no paṭicchannāni. Katamāni tīṇi?

The moon shines in the open, not under cover. The sun shines in the open, not under cover. The teaching and training proclaimed by a Realized One shine in the open, not under cover. These three things shine in the open, not under cover.”

Candamaṇḍalaṁ, bhikkhave, vivaṭaṁ virocati, no paṭicchannaṁ; sūriyamaṇḍalaṁ, bhikkhave, vivaṭaṁ virocati, no paṭicchannaṁ; tathāgatappavedito dhammavinayo, bhikkhave, vivaṭo virocati, no paṭicchanno. Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi vivaṭāni virocanti, no paṭicchannānī”ti.
